The events of October 7 and the subsequent war in Gaza represent a true turning point in the lives of the Jewish People. This is true, whether in the land of Israel, or in Diaspora communities across the globe. As the war continues, attacks and criticism of Israel have become commonplace in the media, academia, and cultural spaces. Even as these continue, antisemitism and its traditional tropes have skyrocketed, linking Jewish people to Zionism and essential illegitimacy, subjugating them to implicit or explicit threats and intimidation.
Describing or explaining, these collective experiences seems merely woefully inadequate to express the depth and profundity of the situation, as the world has significantly changed. In this particular situation, we acknowledge the limits of human expression, art defining a declarative zone concurrent with our time and historical predicament: horror, anger, resignation, spirituality, or the desire to organize and answer, the quest for spirituality, and ultimately, the longing for peace.
Addressing an era of mounting anti-Israel and antisemitic sentiment world-wide, The Jewish Art Salon proudly presents 25 visual artists expressing October 7th and the modern antisemitism in their own thoughts and feelings during these most challenging of times.
